A Modesto native has a starring role in a new TV action comedy about to premiere on CBS.

Ginger Gonzaga plays Helen Tasker in the new series “True Lies,” based on the 1994 James Cameron film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The hourlong show debuts Wednesday, March 1, at 10 p.m.

The television version follows Harry Tasker, played by Steve Howey (“Shameless”), “a first-class spy for the Omega Sector disguised as a computer salesman, who accidentally reveals his double life to his wife, Helen,” according to a story on TVGuide.com.

“With the cat now out of the bag, Omega recruits Helen, who impresses everyone with her formidable skills and teams up with Harry and his close-knit team of operatives,” the TV Guide story says. “Together, they embark on covert missions to outsmart and capture criminals around the world ...”

Gonzaga, 39, reprises the role made famous by Curtis in the film.

According to a story on collider.com, Gonzaga’s character is a language professor and mother of two who “is exhausted and frustrated with her mundane chores and daily routine.”

When she finds out Harry is a spy, she “sees this as a great opportunity to live life to the fullest and also use this new role to reignite the spark in their marriage,” the Collider story says.

Gonzaga is a Beyer High School graduate who has had roles on television and in film. She most recently starred in the 2022 Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.”

In a 2014 interview with The Bee, Gonzaga said her goal while growing up was to be a lawyer. She considered a career in international law and earned a degree in political science from UC Santa Barbara, with a minor in Chinese.

“But I have used none of it,” she told The Bee. “While I was at college, I just realized it definitely wasn’t what I wanted to do. I like performing and being funny.”

In the years since, she’s had plenty of opportunities to do that. Her IMDb.com resume lists 71 acting credits, including a leading role on the short-lived 2014 sitcom “Mixology” and parts in shows from “BoJack Horseman” to “Kidding” to “Space Force.”
