Famed singer-guitarist coming to Modesto; Netflix series ‘Our Planet’ will come to life

Singer-guitarist Jose Feliciano brings his music to the State Theatre, and a Netflix documentary series is reimagined as a live production in “Our Planet Live in Concert.”

In addition, Modesto’s Sankofa Theatre Company celebrates 10 years as the city’s only African American theater troupe by bringing back its first-ever production to the Gallo Center.

Those are just some of the entertainment options set for Modesto from Feb. 25 to March 3.

Jose Feliciano

Jose Feliciano has more than 45 gold and platinum records and 19 Grammy nominations. Born blind in Puerto Rico, the guitarist and singer performed in public for the first time as a 9-year-old. He’ll be in concert at the State Theatre. Limited tickets were available at press time.

“Our Planet Live in Concert”

“Our Planet Live in Concert” presents the Emmy Award-winning Netflix documentary as a live experience. The show coming to the Gallo Center combines film highlights from the series with some new orchestrations and sequences to create a journey across the planet. The live production features an 18-piece orchestra.

“The Piano Lesson”

Modesto’s Sankofa Theatre Company got its start 10 seasons ago with the drama “The Piano Lesson.” The company brings back August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play to the Gallo Center in celebration of its 10th anniversary as the region’s only African American theater company.

Yamato

The members of Yamato: Drummers of Japan bring their 30th anniversary show, “Hinotori — The Wings of Phoenix,” to the Gallo Center in Modesto. Yamato performs Japan’s traditional Taiko drums, with modern innovation, comedy and music.

“Hitting New Heights”

Mandy Gonzalez and Javier Munoz, who appeared on Broadway in shows including “Hamilton” and “In the Heights,” join to celebrate Broadway’s biggest composers at the Gallo Center. Among the music featured will be songs from “Wicked,” “Hamilton” and more.
