Pedestrian, 20, dies after accident at Stan State entrance
A 20-year-old pedestrian died Thursday night after being hit by a vehicle at 9 p.m. on Monte Vista Avenue by Dels Lane in Turlock.
The intersection is the main entrance to California State University, Stanislaus, where the victim, Benjamin Hudspeth, was believed to be a student.
Turlock police said preliminary information suggests Hudspeth was crossing Monte Vista Avenue against a red light, walking in or near the crosswalk, when he was hit by a vehicle traveling west on Monte Vista Avenue. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor, and the driver is cooperating, police said.
University President Ellen Junn sent an email to employees and students on Friday extending condolences to the campus community and listing counseling resources available, said Janice Curtin, Stanislaus State interim associate vice president of communications and public affairs.
“It’s been an absolutely heartbreaking day here,” Curtin said Friday afternoon. She said both the vehicle’s occupant and the victim were members of the campus community, but declined to say if they were students or staff.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Officer Mike Stapler at 209-669-5550 x 6683.
