Modesto man held in El Vista Avenue hit-and-run death
A Modesto man is being held without bail in the Stanislaus County jail in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist on El Vista Avenue the night of June 30.
Evgeniy Viktorochich Gubanov, 34, was arrested during a traffic stop last week in Fresno, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves. Modesto police had information and believed he was involved in the hit-and-run, so his name had been added to a database allowing any agency to see he was wanted here, she said.
He faces charges including vehicular manslaughter, leaving the crash scene, unlawful taking of a vehicle, possession of methamphetamine and reckless evasion of a peace officer.
In separate cases, he also is charged with identity theft to obtain credit, receiving stolen property and burglary. Gubanov is scheduled to appear in Stanislaus Superior Court on Aug. 10.
The crash occurred about 8:50 p.m. June 30 on El Vista, north of Encina Avenue, in east Modesto. The cyclist, Rachelle White, 40, of Modesto was taken to a local hospital, where she died the next morning.
Anyone with information on the collision is asked to contact Modesto police Officer Billy Boyle at boyleb@modestopd.com.
