Police investigate shooting in east Modesto. Victim struck 5 times.
A man was shot five times at a house in east Modesto on Friday morning.
The victim, believed to be about 20, is in stable condition, according to the Modesto Police Department.
Five people, who were hiding out in a home on the 2800 block of Penny Lane where the shooting occurred, have been detained. All of them appeared to be in their upper teens to early 20s.
At this point, they are considered persons of interest or possible witnesses, police at the scene said. Nobody had been arrested as of 10:25 a.m.
Officers were called to the area of Penny Lane at about 8 a.m. on a report of a possible shooting. When they arrived, victim already had been take to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle.
Meanwhile, officers with the Modesto Police Department surrounded the home. They used a public address system in an attempt to coax the possible suspects out of the house. Four initially emerged, then after police continued to call on the loudspeaker for about five minutes more, the fifth person came out.
After checking the vehicle parked in the driveway, officers used a shield as they moved toward the front door of the home. They entered and searched, but no other people were found inside.
Police had a vehicle description associated with the shooting and found in the backyard of the home a gray BMW sedan that matched. The car had been rolled in through a wide side yard gate before officers arrived, said Sgt. Eric Schuller.
No weapon was recovered at the home, Schuller said, but there was evidence the shooting occurred there.
Capistrano Elementary School, whose fields are directly across the street from the home, was placed on lockdown until 9:40 a.m. Students then were told by school loudspeaker that during recess, the blacktop was open but the field was off-limits while the police presence remained.
