Update: Vehicle crash on Sylvan Avenue

A head-on collision Friday evening on Sylvan Avenue caused serious injuries and snarled traffic in north Modesto, authorities said.

Officer Billy Boyle of Modesto police said three people were involved in the crash and all were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries. The collision occurred about a quarter mile east of Oakdale Road.

At about 6:35 pm., a silver hatchback was going westbound on Sylvan, and a black sport utility vehicle was eastbound on Sylvan, when the vehicles collided. The small SUV continued on and struck a tree on the north side of the road, police said.

When emergency units arrived, two people in the SUV were found outside the vehicle and possibly had been ejected, Boyle said. The driver of the silver hatchback was pinned inside that vehicle. The airbags were activated in both vehicles.

Initial reports were that a male driver and female passenger were pinned inside the silver hatchback. The front of the car was demolished.

Police suspect that alcohol might have been a factor in the crash, but that has not been determined, Boyle said.

The crash is under investigation. Anyone with information on the incident may contact police at boyleb@modestopd.com.
