Bicyclist killed when hit by teenage driver in Newman

A 65-year-old bicyclist was killed on Saturday when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old girl, the Newman Police Department announced Monday morning.

Michael Fresquez was riding his bicycle eastbound on Sherman Parkway at 6:16 p.m. and was in the intersection when he was struck by a Honda Civic driven by the teenager, police said.

The teen, traveling west on Sherman Parkway, was attempting to make a left turn onto Balsam Drive. There is no stop sign or stoplight at the intersection.

Fresquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the collision, police said. The investigation continues.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the incident to call Officer Ashley Williams at 209-862-2902.
