Update: 5-year-old killed in east Modesto drive-by shooting
A 5-year-old child was shot and killed in what appears to have been a drive-by shooting in east Modesto on Saturday night, according to Modesto Police, and a second child also was injured.
Modesto Police Lt. Ivan Valencia said that officers found the 5-year-old child on the ground when they arrived at the scene in the 1400 block of Lake Park Court near Mulholland Drive after the 9:41 p.m. call, near the intersection of Briggsmore and Lakewood avenues.
They began treatment at the scene, he said, and the child was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
At about 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, Modesto Police reported on Twitter that the child had been pronounced dead at the hospital.
A second child, a 6-year-old boy, also was injured and was being treated at a Modesto hospital, according to police. He had been taken to the hospital by an unknown person before officers arrived at the scene, Valencia said.
Suspects remained at large, police said.
A crowd gathered behind crime scene tape on the Mulholland-side lawn of the Park Lakewood apartments shortly after the shooting. Tammy Martin, said she and her friend were at home inside their apartment there when they heard something loud outside that they initially thought was a motorcycle.
“The next thing we know, we were hearing all these police cars,” Martin said.
