Info: The Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS) offers the presentation “Forest Health and Fire Resiliency in a Changing Climate” by John Buckley, Central Sierra Enviromental Resource Center (CSERC), a nonprofit group that preserves threatened wild places, defends at-rish wildlife species and protects streams and rivers of the Northern Yosemite region. Buckley will discuss what effects a warming climate will have on the capability of a fire in the Sierra Neveda forests. Both the program and parking are free. What: VFW “Buddy Poppy” Donation Drive

Info: The Modesto Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3199 will conduct its annual Veterans Day “Buddy Poppy” drive. Donations go to the Veteran’s Relief Fund to help veterans and their families. The donation drive will be Saturday, Oct. 28 and Friday, Nov. 3 at Save Mart Stores at Oakdale Road and Standiford Avenue; Walmart on Coffee Road. OAKDALE

What: Oakdale Women’s Club Luncheon

When: Tuesday, Nov. 7, Noon to 2 p.m.

Where: Oakdale Golf and Country Club, 243 N. Stearns Rd.

Info: The Oakdale Women’s Club invites the public to its lunch buffet meetings, the first Tuesday of each month through May. The club is for women whose goal is to promote civic improvements to the City of Oakdale. The Guest Speaker is Pamela Kelly of the Oakdale Rescue Mission; Home Project. Christmas stockings for needy children will be handed out to be filled by Club members and then returned by Dec. 5. The Club members are also asked to bring canned goods for community sharing. Info: The Carnegie Arts Center presents, “Art as Healing,” with guest lecturer, author and Expressive Arts Therapist, Carmen Richardson. Richardson will discuss the benefits of art expression. The lecture will cover the value of the expressive arts and how it helps to manage stress and promotes growth and reflection in our lives. Richardson will share how creating art helps restore a sense of wellbeing and stabilizes an individual to move into states of contentment and security. 75 YEARS AGO: The mayor of Modesto, Carl Shannon, proclaimed that the week of Oct. 25 to Oct. 31 be recognized as Girl Scout Week. The mayor read the proclamation in city council chambers. The proclamation stated the Girl Scouts played a prominent role in the lives of the youth of Modesto.
