Modesto Chinese food restaurant damaged by fire

A Modesto Chinese food restaurant was damaged by fire early Saturday morning.

The Modesto Fire Department responded to multiple reports of flames coming from Lee’s Chinese Kitchen on McHenry Avenue, north of Rumble Road, at about 4:45 a.m.

The first arriving crews found heavy fire coming from the rear of the structure. After going to the back of the restaurant firefighters found there was a fire in a storage area outside the business that had extended into the structure.

Crews began attacking the fire from the outside first then entered the structure to fight it from the inside. Firefighters prevented the fire from progressing past the kitchen area.

The fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damage. The cause remains under investigation.

A total of five engines, two trucks and two Battalion Chiefs responded to the fire.
