Four expected to survive Sylvan head-on collision

Four people were injured in a head-on collision that closed Sylvan Avenue on Friday night east of Oakdale Road. All were expected to survive, Modesto police said Saturday.

Officer Billy Boyle of Modesto police said all were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries following the crash, which occurred at about 6:35 p.m.

A silver hatchback was heading west on Sylvan, and a black sport utility vehicle was eastbound on Sylvan, when the vehicles collided. The small SUV continued on and struck a tree on the north side of the road.

When emergency units arrived, two passengers in the SUV were found outside the vehicle and possibly had been ejected, Boyle said.

The female driver and a male passenger in the silver hatchback were pinned inside that vehicle. The front of the car was demolished. The airbags were activated in both vehicles.

Police suspect that alcohol might have been a factor in the crash, but that had not been determined, Boyle said Friday. No cause had been determined as of Saturday.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the incident can contact police at boyleb@modestopd.com.
