Freight train derails near Hughson

A freight train derailed near Hughson late Saturday, spilling an unknown substance and forcing the closure of several intersections.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the freight train derailed about 11:20 p.m.

Emergency crews responded to check for any hazardous materials. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said a powder spilled but it was determined not to be hazardous.

Between 10 and 15 cars came off the tracks, Stanislaus County Sheriff's spokesman Royjindar Singh said.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday, crews with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail company arrived to begin cleanup efforts and to clear the derailed cars.

Santa Fe Avenue is closed between Hatch and Leedom roads. Westbound Hatch is closed at Santa Fe. Eastbound Hatch is closed at Baldwin Road.

There were no injuries, Singh said.
