Modesto Nuts start seven-game trip with victory over Bakersfield
The Modesto Nuts started their seven-game trip on a positive note, beating the Bakersfield Blaze 5-3 on Wednesday at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth inning – Drew Weeks got the Nuts on the board in the second with his third home run of the season – Modesto took the lead for good with a four-run outburst.
Wilson Soriano’s RBI single to left tied the score and the Nuts pulled ahead 3-2 when Soriano scored on an error. After Dom Nunez walked to load the bases, Weeks singled in Wes Rogers and Josh Fuentes.
That was all starter Jack Wynkoop needed. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound lefty out of South Carolina was steady over six innings, scattering six hits and fanning five while giving up three runs (two earned).
Troy Neiman pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Luis Niebla worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the season.
Modesto concludes its three-game series in Bakersfield on Friday and will return to Northern California on Saturday for a 7:10 p.m. contest against Stockton, the first of four at Banner Island Ballpark.
