Modesto Nuts drop fourth in a row to start nine-game road trip

The Modesto Nuts fell to 0-4 on their season-long nine-game road trip as the High Desert Mavericks held off a late rally for a 5-3 California League victory on Thursday in Adelanto.

Trailing 5-1 in the eighth inning, Shane Hoelscher (.296) led off with his fourth hit of the contest and, one-out later, Dom Nunes singled to put two runners on. After Josh Fuentes struck out swinging and Max White walked to load the bases. Forrest Wall (2 for 4) then singled to left, making it 5-3.

However, reliever Ryan Ledbetter got Luis Jean to fly to center to end the threat.

The Nuts threatened again in the ninth.

Omar Carrizales (2 for 5), who raised his average to .322, fifth best in the Cal League, opened with a single to right and moved to second on passed ball. Hoelscher then reached on an error by first baseman Juremi Profar, and Carrizales took off for third, getting caught in a rundown for the second out. Collin Ferguson then struck out to end the game.

Modesto took a 1-0 lead in the first on Wes Rogers’ second home run of the season, but the Mavericks came back with a pair in the bottom of the frame and the Nuts never led again.

Modesto starter Parker French saw his record fall to 2-4 after giving up five earned runs on nine hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings pitched.

The Nuts and Mavericks will wrap their three-game set Friday at 7:05 p.m. before the Nuts head to Lancaster for a four-game series against the JetHawks.
