Modesto Nuts notch 3-0 win over Storm

Ryan Castellani was brilliant over eight innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters as the Modesto Nuts blanked the Lake Elsinore Storm 3-0 Tuesday night in California League action at John Thurman Field.

The 20-year-old Phoenix native yielded a two-out walk in the second and a leadoff single in the fourth. After that, he retired the final 15 batters he faced, striking out six consecutive batters during that stretch.

Luis Alberto relieved Castellani to start the ninth and promptly issued a walk and a single before striking out the next two batters and getting a ground out to end the game.

Modesto (10-15) gave Castellani, a 6-foot-3 right-hander, the only run he’d need in the first inning.

Forrest Wall drew a one-out walk and took third on Wes Rogers’ single to right. With Drew Weeks batting, Walls and Rogers executed a double steal, making it 1-0. It was Wall’s fifth steal of the year and Rogers’ 12th.

The Nuts would add two insurance runs in the fourth, both scoring on an error Lake Elsinore second baseman Luis Urias.

The teams will play Game 2 of a four-game set on Wednesday – “One Buck Wednesday” promotional night where fans can enjoy hot dogs, soft drinks, snacks and Kids Zone wristbands for $1 each – at 7:05 p.m.
