Modesto Nuts score on wild pitch in 15th inning to nip Bakersfield

The Modesto Nuts made it two wins in a row as they opened a brief, three-game homestand with a 3-2, 15-inning victory over Bakersfield on Monday night at John Thurman Field.

With Omar Carrizales in the batter’s box, Dom Nunez scored the winning run when he raced home from third base on a passed ball by catcher Tyler Marlette. Nunez opened the inning with a line-drive single to right field, then was sacrificed to second base by Drew Weeks and moved to third on Marlette’s first passed ball of the inning.

After falling behind 1-0, the Nuts tied the score in the third when Max White (2 for 5) doubled, stole third and scored on a single to center by Shane Hoelscher.

The Blaze (3-8) went ahead 2-1 in the 14th on Marlette’s first homer of the season, only to have the Nuts tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Forrest Wall’s sacrifice fly scored Carrizales, a pinch runner for Roberto Ramos, who led off with a single.

Craig Schlitter earned the victory in relief, striking out four in two innings while giving up one hit and a run.

The Nuts (5-6) wrap up the series with the Mariners’ affiliate on Wednesday, then head to San Jose for four games with the Giants.

The series finale against the Blaze falls on One-Buck Wednesday. Fans can enjoy hot dogs, soft drinks, snacks and purchase wristbands for the Fun Zone game area for $1 each.

Bakersfield left-hander Tyler Pike (0-0, 1.54) is scheduled to take the mound against Modesto southpaw Sam Howard (1-0, 2.79). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
