Nuts burned by Blaze pitching
Konner Wade threw a solid game for the Nuts on Thursday night.
Unfortunately for the Modesto right-hander, a trio of Blaze pitchers were better.
Despite Wade’s complete game, his one blemish was the difference as host Bakersfield won 1-0 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Wade (7-7) threw all eight innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four. But a solo home run in the sixth by Blaze second baseman Nelson Ward, his seventh of the season, provided the game’s only scoring.
The Nuts had six hits, including three from designated hitter Michael Benjamin, who also knocked two doubles. Drew Weeks, Correlle Prime and Wilson Soriano all had singles.
Modesto had a chance to score in its half of the sixth, but Raimel Tapia, who walked with one out, was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.
Bakersfield’s Will Mathis (4-2) relieved Jake Zokan to start the sixth and threw 2 1/3 innings. Kyle Schepel recorded a five-out save, his second in 2015.
The second of four games in this series is Friday at 7:30 p.m.
