Nuts let one get away in extra innings
Bakersfield rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning and took a 6-5 victory over the visiting Modesto Nuts at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Friday night.
The Nuts scored a run with the help of a throwing error by Blaze second baseman Nelson Ward in the top of the ninth to tie the score at 4-4. The Nuts took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 11th when Raimel Tapia singled, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Correlle Prime struck out on the wild pitch, but reached first.
The Blaze had an answer, however, as Rayder Ascanio and Jay Baum delivered RBI singles for the walk-off win as Bakersfield salvaged a game in the three-game set.
Tapia gave the Nuts a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he scored on a passed ball. He led off the game with a double, the first of his three hits.
The Blaze bounced back in the bottom of the first when Tim Lopes doubled in a run and Kyle Petty singled him in. Bakersfield added two in the fifth, as Daniel Torres singled in a run and Lopes drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Michael Benjamin singled in a run in the Modesto fifth, and Emerson Jimenez singled in a run in the sixth to pull the Nuts within 4-3.
The Nuts will open a four-game series with Lake Elsinore on Saturday at John Thurman Field.
