McMahon’s single in 10th wins it for Modesto Nuts

Ryan McMahon’s walk-off single in the 10th inning gave the Modesto Nuts a 5-4, come-from-behind victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday at John Thurman Field, as the Nuts continued their hot start to the second half of the California League season.

Modesto, which opened the second half of the season by taking three out of four in San Jose, frittered away a 3-0 lead and trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth when Dillon Thomas (2-for-4) hit a one-out triple and raced home on a throwing error by Bakersfield right fielder Austin Wilson.

In the bottom of the 10th, leadoff hitter Ramiel Tapia (2-for-4) got the rally started with a single to center. Tapia moved into scoring position when Jordan Patterson was hit by a pitch, and both moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch with No. 3 hitter McMahon in the box.

McMahon then laced a single to right, his third hit of the contest, to plate Tapia with the game-winner.

McMahon had an RBI double – his league-leading 27th two-bagger – in the Nuts’ three-run third inning, and came around to score on a single by first baseman Correlle Prime (2-for-4).

Modesto’s Konner Wade got his second half off to a solid start, pitching seven innings while scattering six hits. He walked none, struck out five and allowed just one run. Sam Moll relieved Wade in the eighth and yielded four hits and three runs in two innings of work.

Matt Carasiti worked a perfect 10th inning to earn the victory.

The Nuts will send Harrison Musgrave to the mound Wednesday night to face Bakersfield’s Eddie Campbell (3-3, 6.62). Musgrave (9-1, 3.01) leads the California League in victories and ranks third in earned run average, behind Visalia’s Zack Godley (2.27) and teammate Antonio Senzatela (2.36).

Fans can enjoy One Buck Wednesday at John Thurman Field, where hot dogs, soft drinks, snacks and bounce house/slide wristbands are just $1. Select beers and Jack Tone Wine are available for $2.
