Stockton Ports rip off 11 unanswered runs to salvage split with Modesto Nuts

The Stockton Ports scored 11 unanswered runs en route to an 11-6 victory and a split with their four-game series against the Modesto Nuts on Monday night in a California League matchup at Banner Island Ballpark.

Modesto scored three runs in the second inning on a three-run homer to center by Dillon Thomas, his fourth of the season. From there, however, it was all Stockton, as the Ports scored two in the third, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh to take a commanding 11-3 lead.

The Nuts (20-18) would add three in the ninth on RBI singles from Wilson Soriano and Rosell Herrera and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Raimel Tapia.

Konner Wade (2-3) took the loss for the Nuts, giving up five hits – three of them homers – four walks and six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Troy Nieman, who didn’t fare much better, allowing three hits, two walks and five earned runs in just an inning of work.

With the loss, the Nuts fall eight games back of the Visalia Rawhide (28-10) in the race for the Cal League’s first-half North Division title. After a three-game set on the road against San Jose, beginning Tuesday, the Nuts will be home for a four-game series against the front-running Rawhide.

The promotional schedule for the Visalia series is as follows: Friday is Super Heroes Night (postgame fireworks); Saturday is Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Pink Jersey Auction (postgame fireworks); Sunday, kids can play catch on the field before the game and run the bases after; and Monday it’s Make Mondays Matter, where fans can bring two items of lightly used clothing, two books or two canned food items and receive a ticket to that night’s game.
