Olympic Day at SOS on Friday
The spirit of the Olympic movement will come alive on Friday at the Sportsmen of Stanislaus Club for the “Day For The Disabled.”
About 250 disabled children will take part in the special day hosted by the United Cerebral Palsy of Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties, to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A Special Olympian taking part is Sonora’s Joe Delgado, 32, a swimmer and a member of Team USA this summer at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Delgado will be one of 7,000 athletes to compete at the World Games.
Three-time Olympian Suzy Powell of Modesto will make a special appearance as competition is scheduled in swimming, water polo, tennis and Zumba. Golf demonstrations and other activities also are scheduled.
“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the Modesto community,” said Roger Slingerman, executive director. “United Cerebral Palsy of Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties is proud to support the Olympic movement and encourage everyone to lead healthy, active lives.”
The day is part of more than 700 events taking place nationwide through June 30. More than 160 countries also take part in the program that features family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences.
Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship.
