Kap goes to camp: 49er works with kids at S.F. event that bears his name
Turlock son and San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped train some possible future 49ers at a day camp here Saturday and Sunday.
The third annual Citi Colin Kaepernick Football ProCamp was held on the football field at St. Ignatius College Preparatory school in the Sunset District south of Golden Gate Park. Hundreds of first- through eighth-graders, including several girls, attended the sold-out camp.
Staff members said the kids came from four states, including one from Georgia who attended with his California cousins. Participants came from Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties, too.
“I actually saw one kid in a Camp Taylor hat out here,” Kaepernick said early into Saturday’s camp, “so it made my day so far.”
Camp Taylor is the Modesto-based nonprofit that offers several free camp programs for young people and families of children with heart disease. It’s a cause supported by Kaepernick, whose parents lost two infant boys to heart disease.
The campers rotated through various stations over the two mornings; coaches worked with them on fundamentals. Kaepernick was present throughout, joining in drills and lending his talents to several two-hand-touch games played by teams in different age divisions. There seemed no thrill like catching a touchdown pass from No. 7.
On Monday, the NFL star will be at the third annual Camp Taylor and Colin Kaepernick Against All Odds Golf Tournament at Del Rio Golf & Country Club. The sold-out event is a major fundraiser for the camp.
