Late-inning JetHawks homer beats Modesto Nuts
Tbe Modesto Nuts carried a close game into the late innings Thursday night before one swing beat them.
Brooks Marlow’s two-run homer in the eighth inning was the difference in the Lancaster JetHawks’ 5-3 win, watched by 2,475 at The Hangar.
Nuts reliever Marc Magliaro (0-1) allowed a one-out triple to Bobby Boyd preceding Marlow’s shot over the right field fence.
Modesto threatened in the ninth after two walks, but Lancaster closer Jacob Dorris earned his 10th save by striking out Wes Rogers and Josh Fuentes.
The Nuts, who trailed 2-0 after two innings, picked up all their runs via the long ball. Omar Carrizales stroked a solo homer in the third, followed an inning later by Dom Nunez’s two-run rip after a walk to Shane Hoelscher. It was the fourth homer in the last 10 days for Nunez (3 for 4), the Elk Grove High graduate who fell a triple short of the cycle.
Nunez’s homer gave Modesto a 3-2 lead, but Jamie Ritchie’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied it.
Starter Ryan Castellani gave up three runs in six innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Ralph Garza (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings for Lancaster, the second-half leader in the California League’s North Division.
The four-game series continues Friday night.
