Modesto Nuts’ bats go quiet in 3-0 Cal League loss to High Desert
The Modesto Nuts’ bats went quiet Wednesday night.
The Nuts managed only three hits against three High Desert pitchers as the Mavericks shut out Modesto 3-0 at Thurman Field.
The Mavericks (30-17) bounced back from a 5-4 loss in 15 innings to the Nuts (18-28) on Tuesday night.
Max White doubled and stole third with two out in the second, but Wilson Soriano struck out. White was the only Nuts runner to reach third all night.
High Desert starter Cole Wiper (4-1) struck out seven in seven strong innings. He outdueled Ryan Castellani, who lasted seven innings for the fourth time in his last five appearances.
Castellani (1-4) allowed only three hits and two runs but walked four. Two preceded Jose Trevino’s two-out RBI single in the fourth for the first run.
High Desert’s Scott Heineman, one of the California League’s top hitters, singled to start the Mavericks’ rally in the sixth. Heineman was sacrificed to second by Jose Cardona and scored on Luke Tendler’s RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
Tendler’s run-scoring double in the eighth extended the lead off reliever Colin Welmon.
Modesto leadoff man Omar Carrizales, who raised his average to .336 – third-best in the Cal League – went 0 for 3.
The Nuts and Mavericks finished the three-game series Thursday night. Modesto begins a four-game series against San Jose on Friday. The first two games will be at Thurman Field, each starting at 7:05 p.m. San Jose will host the third and fourth games Sunday (1 p.m.) and Monday (2 p.m.)
