Defensive breakdowns cost Modesto Nuts at San Bernardino

The Modesto Nuts wasted another good outing by starter Ryan Castellani and were beaten by the Inland Empire 66ers 4-2 in San Bernardino on Friday night.

Castellani (1-3) pitched well for the fourth straight time, as he worked into the seventh inning. The right-hander allowed three runs (only one earned), struck out seven and walked one. The Modesto defense betrayed its pitcher, however, with two errors that set up runs.

Modesto (17-24) scored both of its runs in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Omar Carrizales continued his hot streak with a double and scored on Dom Nunez’s single. Wes Rogers dashed home on Collin Ferguson’s sacrifice fly.

Inland Empire (12-30) answered with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth, though it didn’t hit a ball out of the infield. In the seventh, an error by second baseman Forrest Wall led to the go-ahead run.

Alex Klonowski, the Inland Empire starter, went six innings and struck out six.
