Two A’s named finalists for Gold Gloves in first season in West Sacramento

Two members of the Athletics were named Rawlings Gold Glove finalists Wednesday, recognized for their defensive performance during the team’s first season in West Sacramento.

Pitcher Luis Severino and left fielder Tyler Soderstrom were selected among the top defenders at their respective positions. Gold Glove winners will be announced Sunday, Nov. 2, on ESPN.

Severino, 31, committed no errors this season and ranked second among American League pitchers in assists (24) and defensive runs saved (6). His overall performance fell short of expectations after signing a three-year, $67 million contract in the offseason to lead the starting rotation.

He finished 8-11 with a 4.54 ERA. Severino struggled at Sutter Health Park, posting a 2-9 record with a 6.01 ERA, compared to 6-2 with a 3.02 ERA on the road.

Soderstrom, 23, played left field for the first time after being drafted as a catcher by the A’s with the 26th overall pick in 2020. The Turlock native opened the season at first base but moved to the outfield after top prospect Nick Kurtz was promoted from Triple-A in late April.

Soderstrom ranked third among American League left fielders with 10 defensive runs saved and finished with 11 outfield assists. That total led all A’s players since Sam Fuld reached the same mark in 2015 and ranked second across Major League Baseball this season.

The A’s plan to make Soderstrom their every day left fielder moving forward.

The last Athletics to win Gold Gloves were catcher Sean Murphy (2021), third baseman Matt Chapman (2021, 2019, 2018), and first baseman Matt Olson (2019, 2018). Mike Norris was the last A’s pitcher to earn the award, in 1981.
