Local Digest: Wild weekend for unbeaten Nuts as home-opener nears
To say the Modesto Nuts’ series against the Lancaster JetHawks was anything but interesting would be an understatement.
The Nuts swept the JetHawks with two wins coming in extra innings and in Sunday’s victory, they trailed 9-0 in the second inning before winning, 10-9.
Left fielder Luis Liberato hit three home runs and had six RBIs in the series and catcher Cal Raleigh scored six runs while third baseman Joe Rizzo had five.
The Nuts are at the Inland Empire 66ers for a series that begins on Monday before returning home for Opening Night on Thursday against the Stockton Ports at 7:05 p.m.
Warrior softball player breaks school record: Stanislaus State senior shortstop Alexus Martinez broke the school’s career record for hits on Saturday with her 241st against San Francisco State.
The previous record was held by Meghan Franksen, the former standout at Ceres High School.
Martinez, who is hitting .282 with six RBIs this year, broke the school’s single-season hit record last year with 76.
