Looking for a summer job, or know someone who is? Try the Nuts
The Modesto Nuts are accepting applications for summer positions at John Thurman Field.
The 2017 California League champions, the Advanced Class A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners will have a job interview day on March 3 for those who have submitted an application in advance.
“There’s a very high likelihood of somebody getting an interview if they submit an application in advance,” said first-year general manager Zach Brockman, who worked with the Nuts from 2008 to 2011. “We’ll try to interview as many candidates as possibly can, and we screen them a little bit when they come in to submit the application.
"If anybody walks up (March 3) with an application, it would be pretty hard to accommodate them.”
Brockman said the Nuts have positions available across the board. “We’ve got concessions, and I’d day that’s the largest portion. Also merchandise, tickets, parking and bat boys,” he said.
Applications can be obtained at the ballpark or by visiting modestonuts.com and clicking on the “John Thurman Field” tab.
The Nuts, who were named the 2017 winner of the Excellence in Community Service Award winner for 2017 by Cal League owners and general managers, recently were awarded the Small Business of the Year Award by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce.
“I wouldn’t say that we were totally surprised,” said Brockman, who noted that the team won the award in 2008. “But at the same time, we’re humbled and honored. It’s a great award.”
The Modesto Nuts gave $291,600 in charitable donations and in-kind services during 2017. “Community is everything here,” Brockman said. “If you’re not a big part of this community, it’s hard to connect with people.”
Brockman left the Nuts organization after the 2011 season to work with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the high Single-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. But the pull to return to Modesto was great.
“First of all, I’ve missed California ever since I left,” said Brockman, a native of Chicago. “It feels like home to me. It’s always had a special place in my heart. I had the opportunity to come back and run the club, so I really couldn’t turn it down.”
The Nuts open the season April 5 on the road in Lancaster, then return for a seven-game home stand on April 12. “Pittchers and catchers report in just a few days,” Brockman said. “It’s been so warm lately, it feels like baseball season.”
