At a glance

Marin Catholic: 12-1, winners of 12 consecutive games; captured the North Coast Section Division IV championship; will travel to Central Catholic on Saturday for CIF Northern California Open Small School bowl.

Coach: Mazi Moayed is in his sixth season as the head coach at Marin Catholic. He has a career record of 73-10, including five consecutive NCS final appearances.

Offense: Senior quarterback Darius-James Peterson is a two-time Marin County Athletic League MVP and the reigning Prep2Prep North Coast Section Junior of the Year. As a junior, Peterson threw for 2,454 yards and rushed for 1,098. Moayed said Peterson possesses “legit” 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash. In his last two games, Peterson has accounted for nine touchdowns – four rushing, five passing. His favorite target is 6-foot-4 wide receiver Peter Armusewics, who had three touchdown receptions in last week’s victory over Cardinal Newman. Offensive lineman Clayton Demski and wide receiver Will Buckstaff have garnered interest from four-year universities. The offense is averaging 38.3 points and hasn’t scored fewer than 31 in nearly three months.

Defense: The defense is led by middle linebacker Nick Gernhard, who will play at Air Force. The 6-foot, 218-pound senior is the program’s all-time leading tackler and the MCAL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Gernhard broke Kimo Bertram’s school record of 319 tackles with 18 in an NCS semifinal victory over Moreau Catholic, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The defense is allowing 9.2 points per game.
