Calton, Escalon complete busy week with win over Liberty Ranch

Escalon 35, Liberty Ranch 14 in Galt – Hunter Calton carried the ball 14 times for 279 yards and three touchdowns, and the Cougars rolled up 443 yards on the ground en route to a victory over the Hawks.

The win was the second for Escalon in five days. Their game against Bret Harte, scheduled for Sept. 11 in Angels Camp, was moved to Escalon and played Monday because of the Butte fire.

“This may be the first time in my life that I’ve had two wins in one week,” said Cougars coach Mark Loureiro, the winningest football coach in Sac-Joaquin Section history with 268 victories. “I’m proud of my kids. That was a tougher bounce-back than people realize.”

Calton scored on runs of 59, 29 and 79, and averaged 20 yards every time he touched the ball.

Up next for the Cougars is a home date with Bear River, the section’s reigning Division V champion, which beat Escalon last season 14-10 in Grass Valley.

The Bruins defeated Argonaut 37-20 on Monday in another game delayed by the Butte fire but had a bye Friday. When they square off against the Cougars, they’ll be playing for the first time since Sept. 14. Escalon will be playing for the third time over that same span.

“It’s a big game,” Loureiro said. “We let the game get away from us last year; we’re looking forward to it.”

Central Catholic 52, Beyer 6 at Johansen H.S. – Beyer can say that for a few minutes it held the lead against one of the best high school football teams in the state. But in the end Friday night, Central Catholic had too much for the Patriots.

Jay Green, Beyer’s all-time leading rusher who entered the game with a Stanislaus District-leading 500 yards, broke off a 45-yard touchdown around the left side to give his team a 6-0 lead over the reigning three-time Division IV state champions.

But the Raiders, behind a stout defense and the running of Montell Bland, scored the final 52 points. Bland rushed for 96 yards and three first-half touchdowns, and quarterback Hunter Petlansky threw for two touchdowns as the Raiders were able to rest their first string for much of the second half.

Central Valley 42, Enochs 21 at Gregori H.S. – Moses Ghiorso settled into an ice bath following a victory over Enochs. Then and only then did the Eagles (2-2) stand a chance to catch the fleet-footed Central Valley star. Ghiorso totaled 413 all-purpose yards and all five touchdowns, highlighting a second-half assault by the Hawks. The running back had touchdown runs of 2, 20 and 79 yards, and later found paydirt on an 83-yard reception. He finished with 199 rushing yards, 144 receiving yards and 70 return yards.

“I’ve never had a night like this,” Ghiorso said, “not even in a video game. Tonight was good.”

Lincoln 34, Downey 29 at Chuck Hughes Stadium – The Knights were intercepted six times, and their defense let a 29-20 lead slip away as the Trojans closed the game with 14 unanswered points and handed Downey (3-1) its first loss.

The Los Banos quarterback displayed his all-around versatility on both sides of the ball at Loftin Stadium. Williams then fired a pass to receiver Zack Smith for a 25-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave Mariposa (1-1) a 13-6 lead.

The defenses took over in the second half, as neither team scored after Livingston’s Angel Ramirez kicked a 34-yard field goal to pull the Wolves (1-3) within 13-9 on the final play of the first half.

Mariposa running back Josh Land gave the Grizzlies (1-1) the early lead with a 52-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Livingston answered with a long touchdown, as Eduardo Mendoza hooked up with Preston Albores for a 70-yard touchdown pass that cut the lead to 7-6.
