Prep roundup: Gregori stops Enochs; Central rolls over Kimball
Neither rain nor wet turf could stop Demetrius Vinson.
Gregori High’s talented junior running back rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns as the Jaguars defeated Enochs 20-6 on Friday night to virtually secure a trip to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
They also kept alive their slim hopes of a tie for the Modesto Metro Conference championship.
The Jaguars (4-1 MMC, 7-2) are tied for second with Modesto (4-1, 8-1), a game behind Downey (5-0, 8-1). Gregori, which lost to Modesto earlier this season, closes the regular season against Downey, while Modesto faces Davis (1-4, 5-4).
Vinson broke off a 50-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to break a scoreless tie. After Jonathan Duggan scored on a 1-yard run in the third, Vinson’s 12-yard touchdown run put the game out of reach as the Jaguars built a 20-0 lead.
Playing a big part in the victory was a stingy Gregori defense led by senior defensive end Ryan Lima and junior nose guard Mike Osborne.
Lima had three fumble recoveries and a sack, and Osborne had 13 tackles and three sacks.
Central Catholic 70, Kimball 28 – The Raiders (5-1 Valley Oak League, 7-2) appeared in top form before their showdown next Friday at Oakdale as they crushed the Jaguars (0-6, 1-8).
Justin Rice had four first-half touchdowns as Central Catholic rolled out to a 56-21 lead. His scoring runs covered 1, 9, 4 and 4 yards.
Los Banos 14, Central Valley 6 – The Tigers (5-0, 7-2) prevailed on a sloppy field to score a Western Athletic Conference victory over the Hawks (2-3, 5-4).
Adam Herrera ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Los Banos took a 14-6 lead at halftime. The defenses, aided by wet turf, controlled the game in the second half.
“This was a battle. It’s a downpour that never let up. It’s a muddy mess. You can’t throw the football,” Los Banos coach Dustin Caropreso said.
Hughson 28, Riverbank 6 – Richard Herrera had two touchdown runs and Walter Fountain had two touchdown passes to lead the Huskies (2-2, 6-3) to a Trans-Valley League victory over the Bruins (0-4, 1-8).
Ripon Christian 26, Mariposa 0 – Kevin Kramer ran for two touchdowns to lead the Knights (4-2 Southern League, 7-2 overall) past Mariposa (5-1, 6-3).
Kevin Kramer had two touchdown runs, and the defense shut down the Grizzlies as RC moved into sole possession of third place.
The victory all but locks up a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff spot for the Knights, who close out the regular season at home against Delhi (3-3, 5-4), which beat Gustine 7-6.
Orestimba 28, Waterford 10 – Joe Sheldon had scoring runs of 61, 44 and 5 yards to lead the Warriors (3-3 SL, 6-3) past the Wildcats (0-6, 1-8).
Le Grand 21, Denair 12 – The Bulldogs (6-0, 7-2) remained unbeaten in the SL with a victory over the Coyotes (0-6, 2-7). Carlos Iniguez had a 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for Le Grand.
