Central Catholic crushes Atwater, gives Canepa landmark victory
The Central Catholic High football team gave head coach Roger Canepa his 200th career victory on Friday night and did it in emphatic fashion.
The Raiders rolled in their season opener, dominating Atwater 49-0.
“I’m glad its over,” Canepa said. “It’s a good start to the season. We didn’t execute very well but our aggressiveness pulled us through.”
Jared Rice, The Bee’s reigning Player of the Year, had 102 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Quarterback Hunter Pentlansky completed eight of 12 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran seven times for 75 yards and a TD.
The Central Catholic defense allowed only 60 yards of total offense.
The game was played with a running clock in the second half after Central Catholic, the three-time defending state champion, opened up a 36-0 lead.
Canepa joined Mike Glines, Wayne Schneider and Mark Loureiro with 200 wins in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Canepa has coached at Central Catholic, Sonora and Calaveras.
