Summerville rolls past Mariposa 70-44
One might think a safety would get lost in a 70-point night for the Summerville High football team.
But it certainly wasn’t lost on Lee Suggs.
The assistant coach said Friday that was one of the key plays in the Bears’ 70-44 victory over Mariposa on Thursday night.
Kenny Warnoch broke through the Grizzlies’ line and sacked quarterback Jake Mayberry to tie the score at 8-8 in the first quarter. Summerville got the ball back on a free kick and Jake Fulkerson scored on a 21-yard touchdown run.
From there, the Bears (2-0) held off Mariposa (0-1).
“That turned things around,” said Suggs, who also is the head junior varsity coach. “Last year, we barely beat them at their place. They were angry and came out to play (this year). They scored immediately on us.”
But right after Mariposa took an 8-0 lead, Fulkerson – who rushed for 176 yards on 20 carries – scored the first of his first four touchdowns, taking the ensuing kickoff back 80 yards.
Later in the first quarter, Summerville punter Travis Rodgers helped pin Mariposa back on its 1-yard-line. The Grizzlies ran two plays and actually went back a half-yard before Warnoch and his teammates converged on Mayberry in the end zone.
Summerville’s Nathaniel Ulvevadet (19 carries, 136 yards) also had four touchdowns, including three in the second half, the first of which came early in the third quarter that put the Bears ahead 37-16.
Zack Smith had two touchdown receptions for Mariposa.
