LARGE SCHOOLS

Comprised of schools in the Modesto Metro Conference, Central California Conference, Valley Oak League and Western Athletic Conference.

1. (1) CENTRAL CATHOLIC (0-0): Idle. Next game: vs. Atwater

2. (2) OAKDALE (1-0): Mustangs return a wealth of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but keep a close eye on 6-foot-2 nose guard Matt Kjeldgaard; sophomore had two sacks. Next game: vs. Turlock.

3. (4) MANTECA (1-0): Darrion Kitson and Dakarai Charles sparkled in the Buffaloes’ 34-6 win over Buhach Colony. Next game: at North Monterey County (Saturday).

4. (5) TURLOCK (1-0): Quick opening night for the Bulldogs; defense helped induce running clock in 43-7 win over Enochs. Next game: at Oakdale.

5. (3) MERCED (0-1): Outscored 22-0 in the third quarter by Clovis West in a 43-21 loss; talented junior Ulonzo Gilliam suffered knee injury. Next game: at Monterey Trail.

6. (6) GREGORI (1-0): Jaguars scored the first 27 points in a 27-18 victory over Chavez of Stockton, the defending San Joaquin Athletic Association champ. Next game: vs. Ceres.

7. (8) DOWNEY (1-0): Knights found their quarterback in junior Brett Neves, who orchestrated first win over Pitman in school history. Next game: at McNair.

8. (NR) PATTERSON (1-0): Rob Cozart earned an impressive victory in his return to the sideline against Escalon at Patterson Community Stadium. Next game: vs. Ripon.

9. (7) SIERRA (0-1): Timberwolves look to right the ship against a former Valley Oak League foe after 34-20 loss to Ripon. Next game: at Central Valley.

10. (9) LOS BANOS (0-1): Tigers turned over the ball with just a few seconds left and Madera escaped 42-39 with a field goal at the horn. Next game: vs. Scotts Valley.

1. (2) RIPON (1-0): The Indians made a 34-13 halftime lead stick against Sierra, the defending VOL co-champion. Next game: at Patterson.

2. (1) SONORA (0-1): On three of their first five possessions, the Wildcats turned over the ball on downs deep in Oakdale territory. Next game: at Lodi.

3. (4) MODESTO CHRISTIAN (0-0): Idle. Next game: vs. Capital Christian.

4. (3) ESCALON (0-1): Cougars erased a two-score deficit, thanks in large part to C.J. Gumbs’ two TD runs, but ran out of gas in 53-34 loss to Patterson. Next game: vs. Calaveras.

5. (5) ORESTIMBA (1-0): Warriors won a wild shootout in the Mother Lode, defeating Linden 58-37. Next game: at Bret Harte.

6. (7) HUGHSON (1-0): The Huskies blanked Johansen 34-0 in Reyn Franca’s return to the sideline. Next game: at Waterford.

7. (8) HILMAR (1-0): Quarterback Daniel Texeira rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns in his debut, a 38-12 victory over Livingston. Next game: at San Benito.

8. (9) RIPON CHRISTIAN (1-0): Knights got comfortable quick in their new stadium and routed Mountain House 52-0. Next game: at Stone Ridge Christian.

9. (10) GUSTINE (0-0): Idle. Next game: at Linden.

10. (6) CALAVERAS (0-1): Gorgeous evening in San Andreas was ruined by McNair’s Derrion Grim, a Boise State commit who set the pace in a 74-26 victory with seven TDs. Next game: at Escalon.
