Stanislaus District football roundup: Duxbury leads Ripon to upset of defending VOL co-champ Sierra
For about nine months, Ripon High School has stewed over its seven-loss 2014 season, which began with a 54-7 loss to Sierra.
Nightmares of that game have been put to rest.
Jacob Duxbury scored three touchdowns as the Indians exacted revenge with a 34-20 victory over the Timberwolves on Friday night.
Ripon led 34-13 at halftime. Duxbury scored on runs of 5 and 60 yards and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from third-year quarterback Nick Price.
Angelo Baciocco returned an interception 22 yards for a score as the Indians staggered the defending Valley Oak League co-champions with an early assault.
Sierra’s Mark Paule Jr. did his best to close the gap. The state’s top returning scorer ran for three touchdowns.
Gregori 27, Chavez 18 at Modesto – The Jaguars jumped out to a 27-0 lead against the defending San Joaquin Athletic Association champion. Gregori rushed for four scores, including two quarterback sneaks by Cam Calton. Tony Cristobal and Hagan O’Brien also scored touchdowns for Gregori, and Demetrius Vinson rushed for 95 yards on 21 carries.
Sheldon 13, Beyer 12 at Sacramento – Jay Green scored both Patriots touchdowns, rushed for 118 yards on 14 carries and caught four passes for 67 yards. With Beyer ahead 12-7 in the fourth quarter, a shanked Patriots punt set up a short Huskies return for the go-ahead score. After traveling to Golden Valley this week, Beyer faces 2014 Sac-Joaquin Section Division I finalist Tracy, three-time reigning state champion Central Catholic and three-time reigning Modesto Metro Conference champion Downey in September.
East Union 41, Davis 12 at Manteca – Lancers quarterback Jack Weaver was 9 for 16 for 251 yards and two touchdown passes each to Austin Miller and Baily Simons. Miller also limited Davis wideout Talolo Limu-Jones to two catches for 30 yards.
Patterson 53, Escalon 34 at Patterson – The Cougars trailed by 14 at halftime but tied it 27-27 after touchdown runs of 14 and 6 yards by C.J. Gumbs, who also returned a first-quarter kickoff 95 yards for a score. Patterson took the lead for good on Michael Lawson’s 83-yard fumble return. Patterson hosts Ripon on Friday.
Ripon Christian 52, Mountain House 0 at Ripon – The Knights christened their new stadium with a convincing shutout of Mountain House, a new school playing its first varsity game. Jonah Lewis caught two touchdown passes from Travis Zuidervaart and scored on an 81-yard punt return.
Orestimba 58, Linden 37 at Linden – Quarterback Joe Sheldon accounted for six touchdowns and 357 total yards, and two-way talent Austin Martins had 196 rushing yards, two touchdowns and 13 tackles for the Warriors.
Waterford 21, Riverbank 7 at Waterford – Quarterback Randy Ogden and receiver David Staley hooked up for touchdown passes of 30 and 84 yards to lift the Wildcats over the Bruins, whose touchdown came on a 38-yard run by Joseph Crosby. Waterford also got a 15-yard scoring run from Caleb Reynolds.
Clovis West 43, Merced 21 at Merced – The Bears rallied from a 14-0 deficit in the second quarter on Rayveon Slaton’s 4-yard scoring run and Stephen Williams’ touchdown on a 25-yard jump ball in the end zone against two defenders with 2:15 left in the second quarter. But the Golden Eagles outscored the Bears 22-0 in the third quarter..
Manteca 34, Buhach Colony 6 at Manteca – The Buffaloes opened a 27-0 lead behind touchdown passes by Dakarai Charles and Gino Campiotti and two touchdown runs by Darrion Kitson. Brandon Muse scored for the Thunder on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Atwater 34, Central Valley 20 at Ceres – Atwater quarterback Frank Cocio connected on two long touchdown passes in the second half as the Falcons scored 27 consecutive points. The Falcons made four interceptions, two by Noah Torres, and the special teams blocked two punts and two extra-point attempts.
Stone Ridge Christian 40, El Capitan 34 at Merced – Shane Casillas rushed for 225 yards on 27 carries, Jonathan Collazo totaled 123 yards on 18 attempts, and Austin Rees finished with 76 yards on 18 attempts as the Lions’ three-pronged attack overwhelmed the Gauchos. El Capitan quarterback Chase Whitaker was 20 for 35 for 324 yards
Clovis East 56, Golden Valley 30 at Clovis – Isaiah Montanez helped give the Cougars an early 17-14 lead with touchdown runs of 15 and 69 yards in the first half. After Clovis East took a 28-17 lead, Golden Valley quarterback Armando Muzquiz found Cadrian McDaniel for a 57-yard scoring pass that made it 28-23. Muzquiz added a 43-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Reyes for the Cougars’ final score.
Madera 42, Los Banos 39 at Madera – Evan Rios kicked a 38-yard field goal as time expired after Los Banos fumbled with one second left. Los Banos quarterback Adam Herrera threw touchdown passes of 64, 57 and 4 yards and added touchdown runs of 20 and 73 yards.
Bear River 40, Pacheco 20 at Los Banos – The Panthers’ defense accounted for two touchdowns on fumble returns of 65 yards by Deontae Smith and 30 yards by Martin Topete.
Hilmar 38, Livingston 12 at Hilmar – Yellowjackets quarterback Daniel Texeira made a successful debut, carrying 21 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on runs of 31 and 13 yards as Hilmar outscored Livingston 26-6 in the second half. Texeira also threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Alex Chavez. Josh Jennings added 112 yards on 11 carries for Hilmar.
Bradshaw Christian 61, Big Valley Christian 6 at Big Valley Christian – The Lions’ lone bright spot was a touchdown pass from Noah Magaña to 6-foot-8, 235-pound tight end Daniel Giannosa. Bradshaw Christian is a Division V school, while BVC competes in D-VII.
Summerville 34, Denair 13 at Tuolumne – The Bears raced to a 34-0 lead before Denair scored two late touchdowns. Justin McCready caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jake Fulkerson to open the scoring. After two short touchdown runs by Nathaniel Ulvevadet made it 21-0, Fulkerson had scoring receptions of 28 and 53 yards from Travis Rodgers. Justin Stoney and Kyle Brock scored for the Coyotes.
Le Grand 54, Delta 22 at Le Grand – Carlos Iniguez ran for 212 yards and three touchdowns, and sophomore Beto Marquez also had a nice debut at quarterback with two touchdown passes.
McNair 74, Calaveras 26 at Stockton – Derrion Grim, who has committed to Boise State, took the opening kickoff 95 yards for the first of his seven touchdowns for the Eagles.
Livermore Valley Charter Prep 26, Turlock Christian 0 at Livermore – The Eagles dropped their season opener for the third consecutive season. Manny Preciado was a brght spot for Turlock Christian, gaining 118 yards on just eight carries, including a 56-yarder. Eagles linebacker Coleman Kirkendall had 10 tackles (five solo), including one for a loss. He also recovered a fumble that was caused by Mason Mark and blocked a field-goal attempt.
