Prep football roundup: Hughson win streak snapped by Ripon Christian
In a rare Week 6 break from league play, Ripon was dominant against Modesto High on Friday night, scoring over 40 points for the third time this season and allowing under 15 points for the second time in 2025. The win is Ripon’s fourth this season, and its only loss came against Hughson in league play.
Also in TVL play, Ripon Christian ended Hughson’s 22-game win streak against Sac-Joaquin Section opponents in yet another classic game between the two schools. Modesto and Enochs played in two of the final nonleague games in the Stanislaus District this regular season. They start league play next week along with the other Central California Athletic League schools.
Central Valley and Johansen both earned Western Athletic Conference wins in tight games. For Central Valley, it was its second straight game determined by under 10 points after last week’s triple-overtime thriller.
Ripon 42, Modesto 14: Ripon opened up a 15-0 first-half lead but an Izzy Ceniceros one-yard rushing touchdown cut the lead to 15-6. Ripon scored once more before the end of the half with a 21-6 lead. Modesto allowed 21 unanswered second-half points before Jordan Pitts scored on a 40-yard run and Josh Cardenas rushed for a two-point conversion.
Lathrop 20, Davis 9: It was a one-score game through three quarters with Lathrop leading 14-9, but Davis could not find the end zone in the fourth quarter and Lathrop put the nail in the coffin with six points.
Merced 56, Enochs 12: The Eagles fell to 1-3 overall on the season with Friday’s loss to Merced, the defending undefeated CCC champs. The Bears, playing in their first road game this season, advanced to 4-0. Enochs begins CCAL play next week against defending back-to-back league champion Turlock.
Linden 40, Big Valley Christian 0: The Lions were shut out for the first time this season, falling to Linden in their second MLL game this season. Big Valley falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. The 40-point output is Linden’s second straight game scoring 40 or more points.
East Union 27, Patterson 21: JP Abrew (9 catches, 111 yards) and UC Davis commit Jackson Fay (9 catches, 87 yards, 1 touchdown) made things difficult for Patterson, but the Tigers were still in the game. Caden Lozano found Jace Johnson for the Tigers’ first score of the game, but East Union led 14-7 at halftime. Patterson evened the score at 21 by the end of the third quarter but could not find the end zone in the final frame.
Mariposa County 52, Modesto Christian 18: Two touchdowns through the air and five on the ground gave Mariposa County its fifth win in as many games this season. Modesto Christian is 1-5 playing an independent schedule.
Sonora 56, Orestimba 0: Sonora led 42-0 at halftime and added seven points in each of the final two quarters. The Wildcats are 2-0 against TVL opponents and 6-0 overall with impressive nonleague wins over Oakdale and Turlock earlier this season.
Ripon Christian 21, Hughson 14: Ripon Christian became the first Sac-Joaquin Section team to beat Hughson since Hilmar in 2023, ending a 22-game win streak against opponents from this section. Like the last two matchups, Friday’s contest was another one-score game. Hughson took a 14-13 lead into the half and neither team scored in the third quarter. A one-yard QB sneak by Mason Tameling with under nine minutes left in the game ended up deciding the outcome. Both teams are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in TVL play.
Livingston 31, Beyer 14: Beyer took a 14-7 first-half lead after touchdown runs by John Mustapha and Tanner Kulina, but Livingston tied the game at 14 before halftime. The Patriots could not score and allowed 17 points in the final two frames of the WAC contest.
Central Valley 28, Pacheco 20: Central Valley bounced back from last week’s triple-overtime loss, securing its first WAC win in another nailbiter against Pacheco. The Hawks trailed 7-6 at halftime. Central Valley took its first lead with just 18 seconds to go in the third quarter after a Sebastian Maldonado 20-yard rushing score. Maldonado also sealed the game with a six-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Summerville 49, Riverbank 0: Riverbank could not find the end zone against the defending state champion Bears. Summerville scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters and added seven points in the fourth in the wire-to-wire victory.
Johansen 22, Ceres 16: Johansen pushed its record above .500 with its second straight win. The Vikings are also 2-0 in WAC play after pulling out a nailbiter. Johansen’s defense has stepped up in all three of its wins as it has not allowed over 20 points in each of its three victories. Ceres fell in its second straight game determined by less than a touchdown.
