Prep football roundup: See who remains perfect after Week 3 of the season
A kick return for a touchdown, a shutout and teams picking up their first wins this season highlighted the Week 3 Friday night football action.
Amos Cady helped propel Ripon Christian to a 3-0 start, taking a kickoff to the house to give the Knights a lead and momentum into halftime. Patterson and Ceres got in the win column with key performances, hoping to build a momentum as the nonleague season winds down.
In other games, Central Catholic hosted the second-ranked team in Oregon, Turlock traveled to Fresno to take on the top-ranked team in the Central Section and Waterford’s defense continued its string of dominant play, shutting out its opponent.
Le Grand 33, Orestimba 15: Orestimba trailed 13-3 after the first quarter and could not recover as it scored just six points in the second and third quarters each and was held scoreless in the fourth. It is the Warriors’ second straight loss, and they will look to bounce back next week at home against Freedom.
East Union 53, Johansen 12: The Vikings scored all 12 of their points in the first half but still trailed 39-12. East Union scored a passing and a rushing touchdown in the second half to extend its lead.
Patterson 28, Lathrop 13: Patterson never trailed Friday night as it picked up its first win this season against the defending WAC champions. Dason Pettis-Lynch broke a 0-0 tie in the second quarter with a short rushing touchdown and scored again on the ground in the third quarter. Ronin Cantu extended the Tigers’ lead to 21-0 later in the third. He scored again in the fourth to make it a 28-7 lead. Lathrop added the final score of the game with 2:15 left to play.
Stagg 37, Davis 21: It was just a three-point game after the first, but during the second and third quarters, Stagg outscored Davis 34-8 to break the game open and hand the Spartans their third loss this season. Davis took a 14-3 lead in the second quarter before the Delta Kings scored 34 points in a row.
Ceres 28, McNair 22: Ceres used a bye week to regroup from its season-opening loss to Hughson, and it worked. The Bulldogs traveled to Stockton and earned a victory over McNair in a nailbiter. Ceres plays its final nonleague game on the road before hosting Livingston in its WAC opener.
Sierra 27, Modesto 6: The Panthers scored their first points in the third quarter but fell behind early after giving up 20 points in the first quarter and seven points in the second. Izzy Ceniceros broke open a 52-yard score for the Panthers early in the second half for their only score of the game.
Central Catholic (Oregon) 36, Central Catholic 22: The Raiders hosted the No. 2 team in Oregon and went up 16-7 at the end of the second quarter. The Rams tied the game at 22-22 early in the fourth quarter and sealed the win with a pair of late-game touchdowns. The Raiders travel to Southern California next week to take on St. Bonaventure.
Buhach Colony 18, Enochs 13: Enochs fell to 1-2 with a second straight loss. The Eagles were good defensively, allowing the fewest amount of points this season by far, but the 13 points is also a season low. Enochs takes on East Union and Merced before their CCAL opener at home against Turlock. The win snaps a 23-game losing streak for the Thunder.
Waterford 35, Millennium 0: Damien Tellez completed all six of his passes for 102 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 23 yards. Alex Wolfe rushed for two touchdowns and C.J. Price added a score on the ground. The Waterford defense came away with two interceptions and a fumble to secure its third straight win. The Wildcats have allowed just 12 points in three games.
Atwater 27, Gregori 14: Gregori fell to 1-2 while Atwater advanced to 2-1 after Friday night’s result. The Jaguars finished a stretch of three straight road games against Merced-area schools. They play their home opener next week against Livermore.
Gustine 33, Riverbank 13: Riverbank could not duplicate the result of its 50-0 Week 1 win, falling to Gustine on the road. The Bruins host Beyer next week before their Mother Lode League opener against Calaveras
Central East 44, Turlock 20: Turlock traveled to Fresno to take on the No. 1 team in the Central Section and No. 21 team in California. After being shut out in the first quarter, the Bulldogs scored seven points in the second and third quarters and added six in the fourth. Central East opened the game up with 19 points in the second quarter and 12 points in the third, putting things out of reach of the scrappy Bulldogs.
Palma 48, Hilmar 20: Hilmar, looking to start 3-0, made the long trip to Salinas to take on the No. 12 team in the Central Coast Section. Palma took a 21-12 halftime lead and the Yellowjackets could score only eight points in the second half.
