Prep football roundup: Week 2 features mix of tight games and blowouts
A pair of Stanislaus District head coaches have not lost a game in their careers as Pitman and Modesto high schools each advanced to 2-0 early in the season.
Oakdale took out on its Week 2 opponent any leftover frustrations from its Week 1 loss to Sonora . The Mustangs put up the most points of any Stanislaus District football team so far this season.
Downey won a regulation nailbiter and Hughson needed overtime to pull out a narrow victory over Atwater. The Knights improved to 1-1 on the season and the Huskies remained perfect at 2-0.
Riverbank also put up 50 points in its first game of the season and shut out its opponent at home.
Big Valley Christian played in the area’s first Thursday night game this year.
Thursday
Mariposa County 35, Big Valley Christian 14: The Lions fell to 0-2 in the Stanislas District’s first Thursday night game of the season. The Lions allowed 309 yards of total offense, threw an interception, lost a fumble and had a field goal blocked.
Friday
Chavez 37, Escalon 30: The Cougars went ahead late in the third quarter, 30-21 on the road against Chavez after converting a Lorenzo Texeria fumble recovery into a 24-yard TD pass from Logan Huebner to Chase Cummings. The Cougars were outscored 16-0 from that point on, suffering their first loss of the season.
Davis 34, Orestimba 14: The Spartans bounced back after getting out of the gates slow in Week 1. They scored their first points of the season and earned their first win, beating Orestimba by more than two touchdowns. This was Davis’ third straight week facing a Trans-Valley League team after seeing Sonora in the preseason scrimmage and falling to Hilmar last week.
Oakdale 70, Lincoln-Stockton 30: Oakdale bounced back in a big way after its Week 1 loss to Sonora, scoring the most points of any team in the Sac-Joaquin Section so far this season in a dominant win over Lincoln-Stockton. Wes Burford had two rushing touchdowns and Richard Flores had three scores on the ground before the end of the third quarter in an impressive offensive showcase.
Merced 45, Gregori 13: Merced took a 17-13 lead with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, and by the end of the frame, Gregori trailed 38-13. The Jaguars fell to 1-1 on the season with their final road game of a three-game stretch against Merced-area schools next week against Atwater.
Hughson 27, Atwater 21 (OT): Things began to heat up after a scoreless first quarter in Atwater. Valente Soria scored once and Lawson Aviles scored twice in regulation for Hughson. A Huskies missed field goal at the end of the fourth quarter meant an extra frame of football. Aviles’ third touchdown was the game winner, moving Hughson to 2-0. Atwater starting quarterback A.J. Banks left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury.
Stone Ridge Christian 50, Modesto Christian 14: The Crusaders scored their first points since the 2023 season, but fell to Merced-area small-school powerhouse Stone Ridge Christian. The Crusaders continue their independent schedule next week against River Islands.
California-San Ramon 14, Patterson 11: Patterson played in its second straight tight contest Friday night, falling to California of San Ramon. The Tigers were shut out in the first quarter, then scored 11 unanswered points, but ran out of time in the end.
Pitman 42, Cosumnes Oaks 41: Pitman picked up its second straight win, starting 2-0 for the first time since 2018. After three straight losses against Cosumnes Oaks, Pitman earned its first win over the program in recent history. Pitman took a 20-19 halftime lead and opened up a 34-19 lead midway through the third. The Pride held off a late Cosumnes Oaks surge to secure the win.
Hilmar 31, Los Banos 21: Hilmar moved to 2-0 after its second double-digit win to start the season. The Yellowjackets never trailed, led 21-0 at halftime and coasted to the win.
Summerville 47, Denair 17: The Coyotes fell at the hands of defending section and state champion Summerville. Denair was held scoreless in the second half, while Summerville scored 26 points in the final two frames, including 20 in the fourth.
El Capitan 26, Central Valley 21: Central Valley outscored the Gauchos 21-7 through the first 22 minutes of the game, but a El Capitan score late in the second quarter helped give it momentum heading into the half. The Gauchos cut it to a one point game by the end of the third and took the lead after a 31-yard touchdown pass.
Riverbank 50, Richmond 0: Riverbank was dominant over Richmond. The Bruins scored 21 points in the first quarter and added 23 in the second. A six-point fourth quarter put the finishing touches on the win in Riverbank’s home opener.
Waterford 31, Beyer 6: The Patriots fell in their home nonleague game against Waterford at Gregori High, falling to 1-1 on the season. Waterford scored more than 30 points for the second straight week, improving to 2-0 on the season.
Downey 43, Elk Grove 42: Downey won a nailbiter in a shootout on the road against Elk Grove. The Knights scored eight points in each of the first three quarters and trailed 28-24 heading into the final frame. Downey trailed 42-36 with seven minutes to go and drove downfield, scoring on a rushing touchdown with about a minute left in the game to tie the game. An extra point sealed the win.
Modesto 22, Bear Creek 10: Modesto improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2022 with a win over Bear Creek of Stockton. The Panthers will hope to improve on that 2022 season, where they lost the next eight games after starting 2-0.
Ripon 64, Enochs 28: Ripon’s offense was dominant, turning in Ripon’s highest-scoring game since it put up 54 in 2022. It is the second straight week Ripon had scored over 45 points. Next week, it will play its third straight home game, hosting Oakland in its quest for a 3-0 start.
Ripon Christian 41, Le Grand 6: Ripon Christian followed last week’s 35 point effort against a defending state champion with a 41-point showing against an old rival. The Knights’ defense was also dominant, allowing only six second-quarter points. Lushen Sanders rushed for two touchdowns and Mason Tameling, Carson Cho and Mason Clark each added a score on the ground. Aaron Van Hofwegen led the Knights with 18 tackles.
