See whom Stanislaus District football fans crowned preseason Player of the Year
Caleb Zaragoza learned a lot from his time as the starting quarterback at Davis High last season.
As a sophomore, he was thrown onto the biggest stage and handed the keys to the Spartans’ offense, passing for 1,297 yards and 14 touchdowns, completing 52.8% of his passes and averaging 129.7 receiving yards per game. Zaragoza and the Spartans were one of three teams to finish with a 4-3 record against Western Athletic Conference opponents.
Entering his junior season, he said he is even more comfortable with a year of varsity football under his belt. He is in a flow with his teammates, more accurate with the ball and more familiar with the playbook.
The fans showed they think Zaragoza is primed for a breakout season, voting him The Bee’s Fan Vote Preseason Player of the Year.
Zaragoza finished first, collecting 58% of the votes in the weeklong poll. He finished ahead of Central Catholic’s Carter Meeks and Hughson’s Bryce McDaniel, who came in second and third, respectively.
