High school football rankings: Week 3 win shakes up Top 5 as nonleague games wind down

There is a shake-up in the top five this week as Downey moves from No. 3 to No. 2 with its third straight win to start the season over a perennial Sac-Joaquin Section playoff contender. Carson Lamb and Ethan Woodmansee connected for four touchdown passes against Merced and the defense and special teams came through late as the Knights remained perfect with a 48-34 road win.

Patterson drops, but through no fault of its own. The Tigers beat Merced Week 1 and picked up a win over Lathrop last week. Their lone loss on the season comes on the road to California of San Ramon.

Though it has a pair of losses, Central Catholic remains the area’s top team thanks to it strength of schedule. Its losses come to St. Mary’s (No. 5 in the SJS and No. 50 in California) and Central Catholic (Oregon’s No. 1 team).
