Defensive Player of the Year: Derrick Kirkendall, Senior, Downey
During the preseason, Downey coach Jeremy Plaa noted the strength of the 2023 Knights squad was its defensive line. He was right, and at the head of the attack was defensive end Derrick Kirkendall. A four-year varsity player, he had his best season as a senior, recording 80 tackles with 18 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks, 12th in the Sac-Joaquin Section. His defensive efforts helped the Knights secure their first playoff win since 2018.
