Patterson High went into its Sac-Joaquin Section Division III quarterfinals game against Roseville down a man.

Running back Sean Hansen Jr. was forced to miss the game with a non-COVID illness, meaning his running mate Lolo Mataele would get more offensive touches.

He made the most of them, rushing for 345 yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries and catching a touchdown pass. He also continued to be a leader on defense with eight tackles, helping the Tigers advance to the semifinals with a 56-34 win.

The fans noticed his performance, voting the senior The Bee’s Player of the Week.

Mataele finished first in the weekly poll, earning 45% of the more than 85,000 votes. He came in ahead of Downey receiver Gabe Hernandez and Orestimba running back Juan Esquivez. They finished second and third, respectively.
