Roundup: Hughson, Ripon battle in close TVL contest, Johansen wins first game

Liam Bridgford opened the scoring for Hughson High against Ripon on Friday night and the Huskies poured it on. They scored twice more for 21 first-half points.

The defense helped out the offense as Hughson forced three first-half punts. Hughson blocked one, which Bridgford returned for a touchdown with one minute to go in the half for the team’s final score in the second quarter. With Ripon looking for life to end the half, David Delgado intercepted a pass on the Ripon 1-yard line.

Things looked like they would remain the same in the second half after Hughson forced a turnover on downs, but Ripon answered immediately, forcing fumble. A Trent Vink rushing touchdown cut the Huskies’ lead to 21-6 at the end of the third.

Ripon went on a run in the fourth. Quarterback Ty Herrin completed a 40-yard pass to Jesus Ochoa for a touchdown, and Vink returned a blocked punt 70 yards for a score. The defense held Hughson scoreless in the second half, but the Indians were unable to push one final score across, falling 21-19 to end the regular season.

El Capitan 31, Central Valley 14: The Hawks were unable to pick up their second league win Thursday night. Central Valley scored both of its rushing touchdowns in the first half and trailed by two scores at halftime. Though they allowed just a field goal in the second half, they were unable to score in the final two quarters.

Johansen 30, Beyer 28: The Vikings earned their first win this season in an overtime victory over winless Beyer. The Patriots took a 10-8 lead into halftime but were outscored 16-12 in the fourth quarter and overtime in Johansen’s comeback effort.

Turlock 37, Gregori 13: Battling injuries in their final league game of the season, the Jaguars faced the Bulldogs with three junior varsity running back call-ups. Gregori struck first with a touchdown pass from Grant Veneman to Trey Webb, but Turlock answered with 30 straight points to end the first half. Turlock’s Cole Gilbert threw for four touchdowns and ran for one more. Both teams are looking at Division I playoff spots.

Central Catholic 69, Sierra 7: The Raiders capped their third undefeated Valley Oak League championship in four full seasons. They scored 56 points in the first half and allowed the only Sierra touchdown of the game in the opening quarter. Tyler Jacklich had three first-half rushing touchdowns of 40-plus yards.

Manteca 55, Oakdale 0: The Mustangs were unable to hand Manteca their second straight loss. Blake Nichelson rushed for just 42 yards, but Bryson Davis ran for 222 yards and three scores in the Buffaloes’ blowout win.

Hilmar 49, Riverbank 0: The Yellowjackets capped their perfect TVL season with a shutout win over Riverbank. Once again, Hilmar was dominant in the run game, scoring six of its seven touchdowns on the ground.

Escalon 56, Livingston 20: The Cougars finished the regular season with their fourth straight TVL win. Friday night was the third game during that streak in which they scored 55 or more points.

Denair 52, Waterford 39: The Coyotes earned their first league win Friday night over Waterford. The Wildcats’ regular season ends with a three-game losing streak.

Orestimba 38, Gustine 21: The Southern League regular season champion Warriors capped their perfect league record by beating the Reds. The two sides went into halftime tied, but Orestimba outscored its opponent 17-0 in the second half. The unbeaten league record is Orestimba’s first since 2017.

Ripon Christian 41, Delhi 7: The Knights wrapped up second place in the SL after a big win over Delhi. Ripon Christian ends the regular season with its only league loss coming from champion Orestimba.

Ceres 36, Davis 0: Landyn Hudson passed for two scores and Tarrell Lee-Gill rushed for three more touchdowns as the Bulldogs secured second place in the Western Athletic Conference. Their 8-2 overall record is the best the school has produced in more than 15 years.

Big Valley Christian 35, Delta Charter 14: The Lions bounced back from last week’s loss with a big win over the Dragons. Five different players scored rushing touchdowns led by Jameson Clark, who rushed for a team high 103 yards on 11 carries.
