Video: Johansen opens new synthetic turf field with first practice during bye week

The new synthetic turf football field at Johansen opened on Thursday, Sept. 1. Student athletes ran through the viking tunnel for the first time and celebrated the opening by having a short practice. The field was completed on schedule, during Week 3, when the Vikings have a bye. They will not regularly practice on the turf, practicing on a grass field across campus, where they have practiced while the new turf was being installed. A synthetic turf field at Gregori High was finished in time for Week 1.

There are no games on the field Friday, Sept. 2. The Vikings won’t even be the first to play on their own brand new field. Week 4 will see Enochs host Central Valley in a non-league contest scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Johansen travel to Twelve Bridges in Lincoln for a Thursday matchup due to the referee shortage. The Vikings will play their first official home game of the season in Week 5, a 7 p.m. matchup against Pacheco.

There are also plans to complete an all weather track by spring.
