The Modesto Christian High School football team is benefiting from its abundance of talent this season. After blowing out Foresthill in Week 1, Friday’s game followed the same pattern.

The Crusaders scored 32 first half points en route to a 47-29 win over Denair. They are averaging 47 points this season.

Raymond Corral Jr. had another solid outing, passing for three touchdowns and rushing for one score. The Crusaders scored 20 unanswered points through the first two quarters and Denair, playing its first game after a Week 1 bye, struggled to get anything going. Modesto Christian took a 32-7 lead into halftime.

Corral Jr. capped his team’s first second-half possession with a one-yard rushing touchdown and though the Coyotes found their footing in the final two quarters, they were unable to mount a comeback.

The real test comes in Week 3, when the Crusaders host El Capitan of the Central California Conference. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Denair looks to get its first win next week as it hosts 0-2 Riverbank.

Modesto 42, Beyer 35: The Panthers scored more than 40 points in their second straight game as they advanced to 2-0 for the second straight season. They can improve on last season’s win total early this year with a win over Stagg on Sept. 2.

Davis 45, Chavez-Stockton 26: The Spartans bounced back from a close Week 1 loss with a dominant win over Chavez. After going down 12-0 in the first quarter, Davis held a 20-18 lead going into halftime after scoring on its final possession of the second quarter. It used that momentum to break away in the second half at home. Adrian Gallegos had four passing touchdowns by the third quarter.

Downey 56, East Union 6: The Knights’ offense continued to produce and the defense followed suit in Friday’s blowout win over East Union. Conner Stoddard passed for five touchdowns and senior receiver Camden Rush caught three touchdown passes. Downey will take its unbeaten record to Merced (1-1) next week.

Liberty-Brentwood 56, Enochs 0: The Eagles couldn’t find the end zone against the Lions, who came out on fire in their first game of the season. Liberty scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters as the game was virtually over by halftime. The Eagles will travel to Atwater, playing Buhach Colony, which also has a 1-1 record after losing to Hanford Friday night.

Gustine 34, Johansen 28: The Vikings looked like they would bounce back from their Week 1 loss to Modesto, taking a 28-14 lead into halftime, but couldn’t find the end zone in the second half. The Reds scored 20 unanswered second half points to complete the comeback, dropping Johansen to 0-2.

St. Francis-Mountian View 35, Central Catholic 28: The Raiders took a 14-7 halftime lead over the Lancers, a lead that continued through the third as both teams scored twice. When it counted most, St. Francis came through. Quarterback Matthew Dougherty tossed two of his three touchdowns in the final frame. Tyler Jacklich finished with 281 rushing yards with two long touchdown runs on 21 carries, but left the game on the Raiders’ final drive with an injury.

Ceres 36, Amador-Sutter Creek 15: The Bulldogs picked up their second win, both by double digits, Friday night. They will play crosstown rival Central Valley next week.

Central Valley 18, Pacheco 17: The Hawks needed a second-half comeback after trailing the Panthers 14-2 at the intermission. The defense came alive in the final two quarters. Josiah Sandoval picked off a pass that led to a touchdown in the third quarter and Anthony Ramirez tallied his fourth interception of the season in the final frame. Jason Casias took a screen pass 85 yards to cut into Pacheco’s lead once again and a recovered fumble that led to a Luis Munoz 32-yard field goal to put the Hawks ahead for good.

The Panthers marched on one final drive in the fourth, but timely Central Valley timeouts iced the visiting team’s kicker who missed what would have been the game-tying field goal.

Clovis West-Fresno 48, Turlock 0: Clovis West was dominant in its shutout win over Turlock. The Golden Eagles scored 28 first-quarter points and didn’t let up the entire game, scoring on a pick-6 in the first quarter and connecting on long pass plays of 79 and 49 yards in the second half. The Bulldogs will host Central-Fresno in Week 3.

Cosumnes Oaks 42, Pitman 6: The Pride could only muster six first half points in Friday night’s tough loss to the Wolfpack. Cosumnes Oaks jumped on Pitman early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. Pitman quarterback Drew Walker missed the game due to COVID protocols. One of the few bright spots for the Pride came on the first defensive drive of the game, when Dylan Freeman came away with an interception.

Hughson 41, Orestimba 28: Both teams had trouble scoring in the first two quarters as Hughson took a 14-0 lead into halftime. The Huskies’ offense exploded in the second half, breaking open a 41-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Orestimba scored the game’s final 14 points to narrow the gap.

Delhi 36, Riverbank 0: The Bruins went scoreless in their second straight game to open the season in a loss to Delhi. Riverbank will take on another winless team, Denair, next week.

Buchanan-Clovis 41, Escalon 40 (OT): In a back and forth affair throughout, Escalon thought it took its final lead of the game when it capped an 80-yard drive with a touchdown with 1:05 left in regulation. Buchanan marched 70 yards in 1:03, kicking a field goal to force overtime.

The Cougars scored first on the extra frame, but failed on a two-point conversion. The Bears answered with a touchdown of their own and kicked a game-winning field goal. Ryker Peters finished with 30 carries, 202 yards and two touchdowns.

Aptos 39, Oakdale 29: A 26-point fourth quarter wasn’t enough to beat visiting Aptos as the Mustangs fell to 1-1. Oakdale trailed 26-3 heading into halftime and though it held the Mariners scoreless in the third, allowed 13 points in the final frame, making a comeback that much harder.

Sonora 42, Ripon 10: Ripon’s Xzavier Baker scored the team’s first touchdown of the game on a 78-yard touchdown run, cutting the Sonora lead to 15-7 in the second quarter but the Wildcats’ 29-point first half was too much to overcome. In Sonora’s dominating win, Adam Curnow completed two touchdown passes to Chance Pimentel including a 94-yarder. Ripon will look to pick up its first win next week at home against McClatchy.

Ripon Christian 48 at Cloverdale 7: Trey Fasani and Griffin de Abreu connected for three touchdowns as the Knights’ offense exploded to improve their record to 1-1. Ripon Christian hosts Calaveras next week in its final preseason game.

Hilmar 21, Los Banos 7: Hilmar’s offense exploded in the second half led by running back Luis Vargas who rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the final two quarters. The Yellowjackets and Los Banos went into halftime tied at 7 apiece, but a 14-point third quarter put Hilmar ahead for good.
