Roundup: Orestimba wins a thriller; Davis, Oakdale and Ripon Christian offenses roll
The Orestimba High football team defeated Los Banos 20-19 on Friday night in dramatic fashion.
Los Banos scored a touchdown on the final play of the game as Adam Herrera connected with Josh McAndrew for an 8-yard touchdown as time expired.
Los Banos head coach Dustin Caropreso opted to go for the two-point conversion and the win, but Herrera’s pass was deflected.
“I just felt there was no time left on the clock, we had our back-up kicker kicking — not to say he couldn’t make it — but I didn’t want to put it on his shoulders,” Caropreso said. “I thought we had a good play drawn up but they did a good job countering it.”
Herrera also had a 28-yard touchdown run for Los Banos (0-3).
Orestimba quarterback Alex Millan threw two long touchdown passes in the first quarter. Devin Bettencourt came in after Millan left with an injury and threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Vargas that gave Orestimba (2-1) the 20-13 lead with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter.
Davis 58, El Capitan 20: Spartans running back Isaac Martinez rushed for four touchdowns, including runs of 70, 64 and 53 yards as Grace Davis improved to 3-0 on the season. Gauchos quarterback Carter Haugen connected with Derrick Harris on two touchdown passes. El Capitan dropped to 0-3 this season.
Gregori 34, Atwater 28: Quarterback Cruz Marines completed 18 of 24 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 147 yards and three TDs to lead the Jaguars (2-1) past the host Falcons (0-3). Wide receiver Reggieon Foster hauled in two of Marines’ scoring tosses and Gregori linebacker Elijah Montez had 10 tackles, including three for losses, and two sacks.
Bullard 14, Turlock 12: at Fresno — The Bulldogs suffered another tough loss to another good team, falling to 0-3 on the season. Turlock will face another good team next week — 3-0 Manteca. JT Foreman had a 1-yard TD run and Cole Gilbert hit Logan Hart on a 21-yard scoring strike for Turlock.
Patterson 55, Pitman 16: The Tigers (1-2) won their first game of the season as Jacob Guevarra had five touchdowns and 197 all-purpose yards in the victory over the Pride (0-2) in Turlock. Patterson plays host next week to Modesto.
Central Valley 20, Ceres 18: The Hawks improved to 3-0 with the victory over crosstown rivals Bulldogs (1-1). Central Valley coach Derrick Goblirsch now has a 2-0 record against his older brother Clinton Goblirsch, who is the Ceres head coach.
Oakdale 48, Spanish Springs (Sparks, NV) 14: The host Mustangs (2-0) jumped out to a 28-0 lead and cruised to victory over the Cougars (1-2). Oakdale is home next week against Archbishop Mitty (0-1), which plays Saturday against Mountain View.
Escalon 21, Sonora 15: The Cougars (3-0) went on the road and defeated the Wildcats (1-2). Escalon led 21-0 in the fourth quarter before Sonora scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes. Cougars quarterback Donovan Rosevink was 10-of-17 for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Logan Anderson ran for 112 yards on 15 carries.
Ripon Christian 49, Calaveras 34: The Knights scored 28 second-half points to pull out the victory on the road and improve to 2-1. Calaveras (1-2) led 21-7 before Ripon Christian tied the score going into halftime. Grant Sonke took the opening second-half kickoff 78 yards to the house to give the Knights a 28-21 lead. He later scored from 3 yards out to put RC up 35-28.
Hughson 37, Argonaut 14: The host Huskies took an early 26-0 lead and remained unbeaten at 3-0 in the victory over Mustangs (0-2). After next week’s game at Summerville, Hughson opens the Trans-Valley League season at home with a mammoth game against Escalon.
Ripon 34, Center 22: Caleb Johnston scored three rushing touchdowns (11, 9 and 2) and Jack Manning scored on 73-yard punt return and a 19-yard run.
