Modesto Nuts’ season-long road trip continues with loss

The Modesto Nuts resumed their season-long nine-game road trip, falling to 0-3 on the trip with an 8-1 loss to High Desert on Wednesday night in a California League baseball game in Adelanto.

The Mavericks (32-21), co-leaders of the Cal League’s South Division with Rancho Cucamonga, scored two in the first, two in the second – Michael De Leon’s two-run shot in the second was his first home run of the season – and one in the third to take a comfy 5-0 advantage after three innings.

Nuts starter Yency Almonte, who was tagged for nine hits and five earned runs in seven innings of work, gave up another two-run homer in the seventh when Luke Tendler took him deep. Modesto reliever Colin Welmon didn’t fare much better, giving up a run and three hits in one inning of work.

The Nuts avoided being blanked with a run in the top of the ninth, getting an RBI single from Dom Nunez.

With the loss, the Nuts (20-32) drop into a tie with Stockton for last place in the North division.

The teams will meet again in Game 2 of this three-game set Thursday at Mavericks Stadium at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday, the Nuts begin a four-game, wrap-around series in Lancaster.
