Andrew Britton set a record in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Modesto Metro Conference Swim Championships on Saturday at Johansen High School.

The Gregori High sophomore touched the wall in 58.13 seconds, breaking a mark set by Drew Watkins of Johansen (58.68) in 1998.

The victory was one of two on the day for Britton, who showed his mastery of all four strokes in the 200 individual medley.

Britton was joined in the winner’s circle by older brother Christian Britton and teammate Aidan Wong. Christian Britton won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Wong won the 100 backstroke and tied for first in the 100 freestyle with Cody Sharar of Enochs. Amazingly, each was clocked at 50.04.

The Jaguars’ 200 medley relay team also set a meet record at 1:39.32, breaking the mark set by Johansen (1:39.98) in 1997.

Downey won its second consecutive Modesto Metro championship, relying on its depth to hold off Gregori 409-377.5. Kyle White (50 freestyle) was the Knights’ lone event winner.

Beyer’s James Berry rounded out the list of event winners. Berry won the battle of endurance and speed – the 500 free.

Behind a strong showing by Alexis Maudlin, Enochs won the girls’ MMC title, edging Sylvan Avenue neighbor Beyer. Maudlin won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

The Patriots had two double winners: Karmen Hulin (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Bailey Hamilton (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly).

Other event winners included Naomi Wenstrup of Modesto (100 breaststroke) and Annabella Rousseau of Gregori (500 freestyle).

Valley Oak League swimming in Oakdale – Scott Tolman of Sierra continues to shape his legacy.

The reigning All-District Swimmer of the Year set two meet records Saturday at the Valley Oak League Swim Championships, guiding the Timberwolves to a team title.

In the end, it wasn’t close. Sierra racked up 142 points, distancing itself from runner-up Kimball (100).

Tolman, headed to Cal Baptist in Riverside in the fall, established new standards in the 50 freestyle (21.68) and 200 individual medley (1:53.54).

Ripon celebrated two double-event winners. Sophomore Ty Wells set a meet record in the 100 butterfly. Wells edged Sierra’s Trevor Fast, who also came in under the old meet record. Wells also won the 200 freestyle.

The Indians’ Daniel Esenwein won the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Ripon’s girls cruised to their second consecutive VOL championship title, accumulating 164 points. The next-closest team was Kimball with 111.

The Indians were led by Hannah Sweet, who captured the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, and Mallory Brubaker, the 200 freestyle champion. Kyra Foley won the 100 breaststroke.

Western Athletic Conference swimming in Los Banos – El Capitan dominated the Western Athletic Conference Swim Championships at Pacheco on Saturday. The Gauchos cruised to boys (212) and girls (209) titles, nearly doubling Ceres’ score (236) in the combined overall.

Marion Carpenter highlighted the girls’ coronation with victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. The boys had two multiple winners in Zak Jones (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Jacob Mumbford (100 breaststroke, 500 freestyle).

Julia Pata of Ceres (100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle) and Logan Friesen of Los Banos (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly) also won two events.

Pitman running back Titus Schammel signed with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana, and swimmer Annika Jaska-Rasdhal is headed to Barton College in North Carolina. ...
