Prep notes: Gregori’s Hijaouy-Ng duo doubles champions of MMC
The Modesto Metro Conference doubles championship belongs to Gregori High.
The tandem of Zak Hijaouy and Andrew Ng made quick work of their draw Thursday afternoon at Johansen High, defeating all four opponents in straight sets.
Hijaouy and Ng faced their toughest test in the afternoon final. Nick Mendez and Hans Beeler of Downey put up a spirited fight but eventually succumbed 6-3, 7-5.
The doubles final capped a balanced effort by the Modesto Metro Conference. Four different schools were represented in the finals competitions. Beyer’s Ryan Lewis ousted Modesto’s Coby McCaig in the singles final 6-2, 6-2.
Like Lewis, Hijaouy-Ng were dominant. The Jaguars duo opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the first round, then swept through the second and third rounds.
Central California Conference tennis: In Merced, Turlock’s Alex Lima defeated crosstown rival Nick Gianfortone of Pitman for the Central California Conference singles championship at Golden Valley High School.
Gianfortone made life difficult on the Bulldogs’ top players during tournament play, eliminating No. 1 seed Griffin Davis of Bearden in the semifinal Tuesday and extending Lima to three sets in the final.
Lima finished strong, though, shaking off a second set in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory.
Turlock also celebrated the doubles championship. No. 2 seed Ziya Ziya and Kellen Ireland defeated Merced’s Colin Rabago and Adrian Lomeli in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
CCC all-conference honors were also settled.
Griffin, Lima, Rabago, Gianfortone, Buhach Colony’s Angel Hernandez and Turlock’s Ryan Asai were named to the singles team.
Ziya and Ireland headlined the doubles team. They were joined by Atwater’s Ivan Rios-Orozco and Jon Escobedo and Merced’s Andrue Orellana and Andrew Berthelson.
Western Athletic Conference tennis: Ceres junior Nolan McCaig was named the conference’s Most Valuable Player, while Livingston coach Brad Osato was awarded Coach of the Year.
Joining McCaig on the all-conference team: sophomore Julian Ramos, senior Michael Cosio, senior Chris Tapia and senior Francisco Lagarde of Patterson; freshman Quentin Barcellos and sophomore Jared Haug of Los Banos; senior Alex Mercado and senior Angel Ramirez of Livingston; junior Oliver Calos and junior Joseph Vance of El Capitan; and junior Ruben Morales of Central Valley.
Tweetables: Sierra leadoff hitter Devi Coglio will sign a national letter of intent to play softball at Holy Names University on Wednesday. The school will host a signing party in the foyer of the gymnasium. ... Manteca junior forward Loretta Kakala visited Louisville this week.
