Goblirsch brothers could meet again at Art McRae baseball tournament
Most brothers are content to test their baseball managerial skills against each other with a simple game of Strat-O-Matic.
Not Clint and Derrick Goblirsch, coaches at Ceres and Central Valley high schools, respectively.
They rely on rosters of living, breathing ballplayers – not dice and stat cards. And so far this season, Clint Goblirsch has one-upped his kid brother.
Actually, he’s two-upped him
The first-year Bulldogs coach led his club to a two-game sweep of the crosstown rivals.
And though their regular-season series in complete, the Bulldogs and Hawks may not yet be done with each other.
As co-hosts of the Art McRae Easter Tournament, the teams could meet again when the annual eight-team affair gets under way next week.
“It’s a friendly competitiveness, we’ll call it that,” said Clint Goblirsch, whose team is off to an 8-2 start this season after having won at least a share of the last two Western Athletic Conference titles under former coach John Bussard. “(Ceres and CV) put the Art McRae tournament on for the last six years, we do it together, and I think that just shows that even though we’re inner-city rivals, we work together to be able to put that on.
“I’d love to see them in the tournament.”
The Art McRae is just one of several tournaments on the local landscape.
Also starting Monday is the 47th annual Dick Windemuth Easter Tournament, hosted by Modesto High School, and the 57th annual Fran Oneto/Atwater-Winton Lions Easter Tournament, hosted by Atwater High.
All three tournaments conclude on Thursday.
In addition to the Bulldogs and Hawks, the McRae tourney will feature Waterford, Johansen, Delhi, Modesto Christian, Kimball and Yerington, Nev. high schools playing at two sites – Ceres and Central Valley high schools.
Modesto, Central Catholic, Patterson, Los Banos, Lodi and Bradshaw Christian (Sacramento) will compete at the Windemuth, with all games being played at Modesto High School.
Atwater, Livingston, Mountain House, San Leandro, St. Joseph (Alameda), Redwood Christian (San Lorezo), Jerry Manuel Foundation (Sacramento) and Douglas (Minden, Nev.) high schools will compete in the Oneto tournament, with all games played at Memorial Ballpark.
